Abstract
The acceleration of drug abuse in the last two decades has lead to an intensive work concerning the problems that are connected with its incidence. This means in the psychological field, investigations about the motives and ways how to overcome the addiction, as well as in the physiological and biochemical field work on the metabolic effects and their treatment by therapeutics. This fact induced a rapid increase of literature. It is therefore not possible to give a complete review in this presentation not even concerning the small field of mineral and trace element absorption and metabolism. Because alcohol is the most common and widespread drug, more is known about the effects of chronic alcoholism. They in many instances are better understood. Consequently, much more attention will be given to these questions. Additionally, on the basis of today’s knowledge about mineral and trace element metabolism, some common problems of interest from the standpoint of nutrition will be considered.
