Morphology of Membrane Systems in Pancreatic Islets

For many years, membrane systems have been identified as key effectors in cell function. In parallel with this awareness of the importance of membranes, much effort has been spent to gain a detailed knowledge of their structure in a great variety of cells. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the evidence accumulated up to now concerning the ultrastructure of intracellular and plasma membranes in pancreatic islet cells. The normal architecture of the membranes will be reviewed first, and then the alteration of this structure during normal and pathological functioning of the islet cells.
