Abstract
Until recent years, industrial robots had been limited to resistance spot welding applications. In about 1975, automatic, continuous — seam MIG (metal inert gas) arc welding systems began to be developed. The use of robots for arc welding is now growing rapidly, and is expected to constitute 15% of U.S. unit sales by 1990, exceeding spot welding robotic applications. In arc welding, robots increase arc time, remove operators from hazardous environments and reduce the cost of worker protection.
