Biochemical Aspects of Interferon Action

  • Chapter
The Molecular Basis of Viral Replication

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 136))

Abstract

Interferons subtypes are the members of a large family of antiviral substances produced by different animal cells stimulated with viruses or different other inducers (Table 1). Beside their antiviral activity, they behave like pleiotropic hormonal effectors, modifying on the one side the biochemistry of the treated cell at various levels (membrane characteristics, antigen exposure, protein expression, among others), and on the other hand the physiology of the entire organism where they not only behave as part of the immediate defense mechanism against viral infection, but also as potent immunomodulating agents (1, 2) and, in several instances as autocrine regulators implicated in the control of cell growth and differentiation (3, 4).
