Abstract

Zona pellucida (ZP) is one of the potential target antigen for immunocontraception (1, 2). Conventional antibodies raised against ZP inhibit sperm-zona interaction in vitro (3–6) and block fertility in various species on active and passive immunization (7–10). Most studies have focussed on porcine ZP, in view of its immunological reactivity with human zonae. Moreover heterospecies antigen is also expected to be more immunogenic. Indeed immunization of rabbits with porcine zonae resulted in production of high antibody titres and block of fertility in contrast to rabbit zonae which were not as effective.
