Inhibition of the Fatty Acid Biosynthesis in Isolated Chloroplasts

  • Chapter
Biological Role of Plant Lipids

Summary

We studied the effect of the cyclohexane-1,3-dione herbicides sethoxydim and cycloxydim and the phenoxyphenoxypropionic acid herbicide diclofop on the de novo fatty acid biosynthesis of isolated chloroplasts of several sensitive and tolerant plants. The results indicate that the tolerance of different plants against the investigated inhibitors of the de novo fatty acid biosynthesis to be based either on particular properties of the cytoplasm (Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Poa annua ) or on properties of the chloroplasts, including the target enzyme (Pisum sativum). The capacity for fatty acid biosynthesis in isolated oat chloroplasts was dependent on the age of the plastids. The highest rates of fatty acid synthesis were found in the youngest chloroplasts isolated from the lower part of oat leaf blades, whereas the lowest rates were measured in the oldest chloroplasts isolated from the upper part of the leaf blades. The percentage inhibiton of fatty acid biosynthesis by cycloxydim (lμM) was clearly higher in younger than in older chloroplasts.
