Abstract
Netropsin is a basic polypeptide antibiotic with cancerostatic properties having a high affinity for AT enriched sequences in the chromosome [1]. Consequently, whereas growth of bacteria is only slightly affected, sporogenesis is heavily impaired [2]. The process of sporulation seems to be inhibited before or at the beginning of the II. sporulation stage [3]. We found that netropsin suppressed protein turnover but stimulated the synthesis of an extracellular metalloproteinase in Bacillus megaterium [4]. The antibiotic affected in a similar way the formation of the proteinase not only during sporulation but also during growth. The effect of the antibiotic on the proteinase regulation was further studied and the results are presented in this communication.
