Abstract
This paper represents a summary of some experiments concerned with elucidating the factors contributing to the efficacy and reliability of synaptic transmission in the perforant path from the entorhinal cortex to the fascia dentata of the hippocampus. Not only is this system the major source of excitatory afferents to the fascia dentata, but it also appears to represent a large fraction of the total excitatory cortical input to the hippocampal system as a whole. A detailed understanding of the function of this major input stage is thus crucial for any overall model of hippocampal function.
