Pre- and Perinatal Endocrinology

  • Chapter
Principles and Prenatal Growth

Abstract

The understanding of prenatal and perinatal endocrinology in man still remains in a primitive stage compared to the accumulating knowledge obtained in animal studies, particularly in the rat, rabbit, sheep, and more recently in the monkey (Jost and Picon, 1970). Obvious ethical limitations restrict the investigation of perinatal endocrinology in man, even though the relevance of such studies is critical to the understanding of endocrine development after birth. However, the increasing availability ]of specific assays, using very small samples of biologic fluids, has accelerated the investigation of endocrine factors that represent important markers for maturation and behavior in the perinatal period.
