Abstract
Uterine fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumors that are found in at least 20% of women over age 30 years. The incidence of fibroids increases with age until the time of menopause. Fibroids may be identified in up to 50% of nulliparous women at the age of 50 years.1 Most women with uterine leiomyomata are asymptomatic. Symptoms that may be attributed to myomas include pelvic pain, pelvic pressure, urinary frequency as a result of direct compression of the bladder, constipation or tenesmus as a result of compression of the colon, abdominal bloating, or abnormal uterine bleeding. Submucous myomas or large intramural myomas may be associated with recurrent pregnancy loss and infertility.
