Effect of Triethylamine on the Synthesis of Group IV B Polyethers

  • Chapter
Crown Ethers and Phase Transfer Catalysis in Polymer Science

Abstract

The use of two-phase systems employing reactive reactants where reaction occurs near the interface was popularized by Schnell on polycarbonates, 1–5 Conix on polyesters, 6–9 Morgan on polyurethanes and polyamides 10–12 and Carraher on metal-containing polymers and phosphorus-containing products. 13–15 The method has many variations and is a highly effective procedure for the rapid synthesis of many products. Until recently the technique emphasized the synthesis of polymeric materials based on the Schotten-Baumann concept on the laboratory scale. More recently similar synthetic systems employed the addition of agents, now called phase transfer agents, with an enlarged emphasis including many (potential) industrial scale syntheses of both small and polymeric materials.
