Abstract

Cerebrosides contain three moieties: a fatty amine, a fatty acid, and a hexose. The fatty amine is usually sphingosine, an 18-carbon straight-chain primary amine characterized by 2 hydroxyls (one of them allylic) and 1 amine group. A small amount of dihydrosphingosine occurs also. The fatty acid is of the straight-chain type and may have a hydroxyl group in the 2-position. If the cerebroside contains a hydroxy fatty acid, it is referred to as a hydroxy cerebroside. The sugar moiety is galactose or glucose. Since the occurrence of the latter in brain has only recently been soundly established, the older literature refers to the galactocerebroside as cerebroside; however, it is becoming increasingly important to mention the hexose in the name, as in glucocerebroside.
