Abstract
The seismicity of an active earthquake area, that is its space-time-size earthquake history represents an attractive target for the practitioners of modeling of sequences of fracturing events. One of the principal characteristics of earthquake occurrence is clustering in the 5-dimensional space of time, space and size. Before attacking the problems of modeling, which must perforce invoke the physics of deformation of solids, we first outline the properties of the natural target. This paper is intended to be a primer of statistical earthquake phenomenology. We describe not only the space-and-time-average properties, but also some of the clustering phenomenology.
