Abstract
Automatic closed loop control of therapeutic interventions in the critically ill patient allows therapy to be optimized to rapidly changing patient needs. Three such examples of closed loop control in clinical care are presented: 1) the mechanically ventilated patients where the rate of ventilation is controlled according to metabolic rate, 2) the burn patient where IV fluids are given to maintain urine output and 3) a method of monitoring metabolic rate using a feedback replenishment technique. In each case a microprocessor system provides the necessary feedback control and user interaction. The microprocessor itself is small and inexpensive enough to provide integration of multiple inputs, high level user interaction, and flexibility during instrumentation development.
