ENDOR of Randomly Oriented Mononuclear Metalloproteins

Toward Structural Determinations of the Prosthetic Group

  • Chapter
EMR of Paramagnetic Molecules

Part of the book series: Biological Magnetic Resonance ((BIMR,volume 13))

Abstract

ENDOR (electron nuclear double resonance) spectroscopy has matured considerably since its early applications involving color centers and phosphorous donors more than 30 yr ago (Feher, 1956; Seidel, 1961). Although it basically involves EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) detection of NMR transitions in paramagnetic systems, many schemes for its application have appeared. A major line can be drawn between transient and stationary ENDOR, a differentiation which dates back to the two initial investigations. Transient phenomena are best covered today under the term “pulsed ENDOR, ” schemes and applications for which are dealt with in Chapter 7 of this volume. This chapter deals with stationary transitions.
