Investigation of Isothermal Sintering of Silica Aerogels

  • Chapter
Sol-Gel Processing and Applications

Abstract

Isothermal sintering has been studied for series of high-and low-temperature supercritically dried base-catalysed silica aerogels with different initial densities. The change in density has been recorded in situ using a dilatometer. The viscosity derived form the density increase, applying the standard sintering theory for gels, is compared to the viscosity directly measured using the beam-bending technique. Structural changes have been studied by means of small angle X-ray scattering. For the highly porous samples under investigation the variation of the specific inner surface area as well as the viscosity measurements are found to disagree with the theoretical predictions of other authors.
