Abstract
Optimal medical management of the patient with complex partial seizures should take into account a number of factors, including the efficacy of a drug, its adverse effects profile, its pharmacokinetics, its ease of use, the potential for drug interactions, the age and sex of the patient, emergency use and cost. Only recently have data from controlled clinical trials become available comparing the relative efficacy and adverse effects of the standard antiepileptic drugs. It has become apparent that, because of a lack of significant differences in efficacy, other considerations play an important role in the choice of a specific antiepileptic drug.
