Abstract
That membrane damage plays a role in the photoinactivation of cells especially in the presence of photodynamic sensitizers has been recognized for several decades [1,2]. But compared to other sites of photodamage, biomembrane damage has been given much less attention. I have chosen to address the subject of biomembrane photodegradation for three reasons: (1) A number of studies in the field have been carried out since the last Congress which are important to review. (2) Some key questions have been formulated for which there are no answers presently and I hope to stimulate additional work on them. (3) The destructive effect of light upon biomembranes is relevant to human health in that the phototoxic effects of a variety of compounds may be chiefly a result of such damage.
