Techniques of High Resolution Auger Electron and X-Ray Spectroscopy in Energetic Ion Atom Collision

  • Chapter
Fundamental Processes in Energetic Atomic Collisions

Abstract

When a heavy ion collides with an atom, electrons are removed from inner shells with remarkably high probability. Fig.1 illustrates the process involved in energetic ion-atom collisions. The inner-shell vacancies may be filled by Auger transitions under emission of monoenergetic electrons. Also, the vacancies may be filled by radiative transitions producing x-rays. Generally, the vacancy production and its decay are processes well separated in time.

Decay modes of inner-shell vacancies produced in energetic ion-atom collisions.
