Abstract
In 1981 we started a study on breast conserving surgery in Kopparberg County, Sweden. The background was empirical data on breast conserving treatment [1–4], the results from randomized studies [5,6], and an increasing proportion of cancers found at an earlier stage as a result of an ongoing trial with breast cancer screening with mammography [7].
