Abstract

The model for rare earth valence mixing which we discuss here is a generalization of that presented earlier for Eu valence instabilities.3 In particular, we will address the singlet ground state formation, the degeneracy dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, and potential phase diagrams when intersite magnetic or valence state interactions are included. Finally, a method of treating spin fluctuations within such an ionic configuration model is discussed.
