Transmembrane Channels and Disease

Abstract

In this article, two examples of faulty transmembrane channels in disease are presented. The first concerns continuous and spontaneous firing of Na+ channels in neurones, that may explain the pain associated with postherpetic and other types of neuralgia. The second concerns the insertion of non-specific channels into the plasma membrane of certain cells, that appears to underly the action of toxins secreted by pathogenic bacteria and other organisms. The damage caused by such channels can be prevented by Zn2+ and other divalent cations.
