Abstract
Silver staining (Goodpasture and Bloom, 1975; Howell and Black, 1980) is widely used for visualizing in eukaryotic cells the transcriptionally active nucleolar organizing regions (NOR) (for review see Howell, 1982; Hubbell, 1985). It is well known that at very early stages of mammalian embryonic development chromosomes are genetically inactive, and ribosomal genes, like any others, are not transcribed (for review see Magnuson and Epstein, 1981; Johnson, 1981; Dyban and Baranov, 1987). The silver stained NORs (Ag-NORs) in metaphase chromosomes were detected in the 2 cell mouse embryos and at later stages (Engel, Zenzes, Schmid, 1977; Hansmann et al., 1978; Patkin and Sorokin, 1983). There is also data that parthenogenetically activated mouse ova have no Ag-NORs (Hansmann, Gebauer and Grimm, 1978). All these observations are very preliminary and need further study.
