Role of Astroglial Cells in Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis

  • Chapter
Trends in Neuroimmunology

Abstract

Astrocyte reaction is among the prominent events occurring in CNS inflammatory lesions. Such reaction leads to a particular way of scarring resulting in fibrous gliosis. Reactive astrocytes show cell body and nucleus morphology larger than the two major types of astrocytes described in normal nervous tissue.1,2 Reactive astrocytes also contain larger amounts of DNA,3 intermediate filaments,4 glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)5,6 and oxidoreductive enzyme activity.7 These cells probably contribute also to the removal and phagocytosis of degenerating myelin.4 In vivo reactive astrocytes probably originate from normal astrocytes undergoing hyperplasia and hypertrophy1,7−11 However, the inducing signals and the time course of this activation are still unknown.
