Abstract

Many antibiotics are produced by strains of the genus Streptomyces. Although they are classified as gram-positive organisms, the streptomycetes exhibit a more complicated life cycle than do Bacillus and also show greater differentiation. The genomic size is about 6000 kbp, 1.6 times larger than that of E. coli (Genthner et al., 1985). Genetic manipulation in Streptomyces has been established by D.A. Hopwood and his coworkers (Hopwood et al., 1985a). So far, treatment with mutagens and the screening of resulting clones has been repeated and adopted as a procedure for the breeding of antibiotic-producing microorganisms and has produced good results.
