Abstract
The treatment of fecal incontinence varies with its etiology and severity. Nonsurgical therapy is the first step in almost all cases. An intact and functional anorectal ring of adequate length and an appropriate anorectal angle are very important for continence. The majority of operative procedures for fecal incontinence attempt to restore this anatomy.
