Abstract

‘What is History?’ asked E. H. Carr nearly a quarter of a century ago, and one of the ways he explored this question was to define the pursuit of history as ‘an unending dialogue between the present and the past’. It was in the belief that this unending dialogue has taken fundamentally new avenues since Professor Carr first asked his influential question that, in 1984–85, the magazine HISTORY TODAY decided to pose the question what is history? afresh, and in ways that it was hoped were in keeping with these new approaches.
