Abstract
The three main paradigms of computer based tutoring systems are computer assisted instruction, hypertext, and intelligent tutoring. Each of these uses a characteristic combination of models and representations for the four instructional architecture components, namely the subject matter, the learner model, the didactic expertise, and the communication interface. A brief survey on these main paradigms emphasizes their subject matter components. These considerations are used to develop a graph based subject matter structuring approach for conceptual as well as for procedural knowledge as the core of a computer based tutoring system architecture.
