Untersuchungen belegen, dass Strategien des Empowerments einen effektiven und erfolgreichen Ansatz in der Gesundheitsförderung darstellen (Wallerstein, 2006). Beim Begriff des Empowerments handelt es sich allerdings um ein so weitgefasstes Konzept, dass hinter den berichteten Effekten sehr unterschiedliche Wirklichkeiten stehen. Empowerment-Strategien umfassen eine Reihe verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Konzepte wie soziale Integration, soziale Kohäsion, Unterstützung, soziales Kapital, Zugang zu Institutionen, Zugang zu Informationen, Training in Sozialkompetenzen (social skills), Transparenz von Entscheidungen oder Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, die alle auf die eine oder andere Weise den Tatbestand des Empowerments erfüllen, indem sie ein Individuum dazu befähigen, Kontrolle über die eigenen Lebensumstände im Sinne der Erhöhung seiner Gesundheit (WHO, 1986, 1998) auszuüben.
