Abstract
The main advantage of slow continuous dialysis techniques is that they can be used in patients with poor cardiovascular hemodynamics. This chapter reviews the choice of access, the problems resulting from vascular access creation and finally, briefly, the techniques of access creation in hemodynamically unstable patients. Although most data on vascular access techniques and problems are from chronic dialysis populations, the principles applied here have been extrapolated to apply more specifically to the ICU population.
