Biological Properties of Selected Fluorine-Containing Organic Compounds

  • Chapter
Pharmacology of Fluorides

Abstract

The majority of the compounds to be discussed in this chapter are either aromatic or heterocyclic in structure. Aliphatic compounds have been described previously in Volume XX/1 of this Handbuch, e.g. by Metcalf (insecticides), Pattison and Peters (monofluoro aliphatic compounds), Clayton (fluoroalkanes, fluoroalkenes, and fluoroalcohols), and Krantz and Rudo (anesthetics). Certain other classes are discussed elsewhere in this volume (Chen, Jr. and Borrevang, steroids; Marquis, arnino acids).

The author appreciates the time and effort given by Dr. Harold C. Hodge and Dr. Paul E. Morrow in reading and commenting upon the manuscript of this chapter. He also expresses his thanks to Mr. W.L. Downs and to Drs. A.L. Dounce, R.W. Helmkamp and E.R.M. Kay for a number of beneficial discussions of certain of the topics presented. Dr. Helmkamp was especially helpful in questions of organic chemical nomenclature.
