Abstract

One of the challenges we face today is developing reliable methods to adequately induce osteoinductive properties in osteoconductive grafting materials. By incorporating growth factors, the natural regeneration process is enhanced, and comorbidities associated with requiring a harvesting site are eliminated. While there are drawbacks, namely, increased inflammation and swelling, rhBMP-2 with collagen sponges has been shown to result in bone grafting volume and retention comparable to autografts in a variety of defect sizes and locations.
