Rapid Recovery in Total Joint Arthroplasty

Abstract

Rapid recovery protocols (RRP) in total hip arthroplasty (THA) aim to decrease patient length of stay (LOS), reduce postoperative pain, minimize complications, and improve patient satisfaction. RRP require attention to detail during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care. Despite being referred to as the practice of medicine, most of the “practices,” including the physical, mental, and emotional energy, should occur before entering into the operating room. The operating room should be reserved for execution of a well-thought-out and prepared surgical plan (and backup plans) with efficiency.

This multifaceted approach results in decreased operating room time and optimized patient analgesia. In this chapter, we will discuss strategies, techniques, protocols, and new technology that focus on proficiency in THA.
