Abstract
Collaborations between basic scientists and clinicians are critical to answering complex healthcare problems. Successful collaborations offer the opportunity to advance scientific knowledge by performing high-quality, high-impact, translational research. However, collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians is not an easy task and requires commitment and resources. When beginning a collaboration, it is important to find the “right” collaborator who you envision having a long-lasting relationship with. In addition, it is important for both parties to understand the clinician’s commitment to research. Successful collaborations have a shared vision of the research interests and goals. Through effective leadership, trust, communication, and institutional support, collaborations between basic scientists and clinicians can thrive.
