Handbook of Interdisciplinary Treatments for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Part of the book series: Autism and Child Psychopathology Series ((ACPS))

Abstract

Individuals with ASD evince high rates of comorbid or co-occurring disorders. Common comorbidities include neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., intellectual disability, ADHD), medical concerns (e.g., seizures, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, asthma), behavioral problems (e.g., aggression, self-harm), and psychopathology (e.g., depression, anxiety). Additionally, some medical concerns may obscure ASD symptoms and delay diagnosis. ASD is a heterogeneous and complex disorder that requires individualized treatment, and the identification of comorbid disorders can help to inform intervention decisions. Integrating treatments to address all potential areas related to impairment has the potential to optimize outcomes for these individuals, so professionals are encouraged to consider potential comorbidities in both assessment and treatment.
