About this book

This open access book gives both a theoretical and practical overview of several important aspects of additive manufacturing (AM). It is written in an educative style to enable the reader to understand and apply the material. It begins with an introduction to AM technologies and the general workflow, as well as an overview of the current standards within AM. In the following chapter, a more in-depth description is given of design optimization and simulation for AM in polymers and metals, including practical guidelines for topology optimization and the use of lattice structures. Special attention is also given to the economics of AM and when the technology offers a benefit compared to conventional manufacturing processes. This is followed by a chapter with practical insights into how AM materials and processing parameters are developed for both material extrusion and powder bed fusion. The final chapter describes functionally graded AM in various materials and technologies. Throughout the book, a large number of industrial applications are described to exemplify the benefits of AM.

About the editors

Damir Godec is a full Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb (UNIZAG FSB), Croatia. Since 2014, he is a head of Centre for Additive Technologies (CaTeh) at UNIZAG FSB. Since 2016, he is a guest lecturer on Additive Manufacturing with Polymers at Montanuniversität Leoben - MUL (Austria), and since 2020, he is a guest lecturer at Faculty of Polymer Technology, Slovenj Gradec (Slovenia), on subject polymer materials for 3D technologies.

Joamin Gonzalez-Gutierrez is a Privatdozent on Advanced Processing of Thermoplastic-based Particulate Composites at the Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL). Currently, he is a Research and Technology Associate at the Luxembourg of Science and Technology (LIST), where he works on developing sustainable, responsive polymeric materials for additive manufacturing.

Axel Nordin is a senior lecturer at the division ofProduct Development and director of the Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Design program at Lund University. His work focus on developing methodologies and tools for designing products that satisfies both user needs and technical constraints. His research is mainly concerned with studying aspects of integrating complex morphologies into customized products, such as computational, manufacturing, structural, and usability challenges. He is specialized in topology optimization for AM, generative design, and parametric design optimization.

Eujin Pei is the director for Postgraduate Research and director for the B.Sc. Product Design Engineering Programme at Brunel University London. He is a chartered engineer (CEng) and a chartered technological product designer (CTPD). His research focuses on Additive Manufacturing, and he leads the 4D Printing Research Group at Brunel University London. He is chair of the BritishStandards Institute AMT/8 Committee for Additive Manufacturing; convener of the International Organisation for Standardisation ISO/TC261/WG4 that develops global Standards for Additive Manufacturing Data and Design; and convener of ISO/TC261/JG67 for Functionally Graded Additive Manufacturing. He is the editor-in-chief for the Progress in Additive Manufacturing Journal (Springer), councilor for the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), and a member of the Engineering Council Registration Standards Committee (RSC) in the UK.

Julia Ureña is an assistant professor doctor accredited by ANECA. Her research is focused on the design, development, and processing of materials with special focus on the Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing fields. She has experience in materials development through Additive Manufacturing technologies, materials characterization and their study of mechanical, tribological, corrosion, and biocompatibility properties. Since 2018, she works as a R&D materials engineer at AIDIMME (Spain) with the activity mainly focused on the material and process development in the field of Additive Manufacturing.
