Abstract
We report the rounding of the crystal facets of Au nanoparticles on a sapphire substrate during thermal annealing at high temperatures. As the annealing temperature was increased over 800 °C, the stable top (111) facet of Au-NPs of about 200 nm in size was surrounded by rounded rough regions and disappeared completely at 900 °C. The transformation temperature, above which faceted nano-crystals became round, decreased as the size of the nano-crystals decreased. The alignment in the crystal orientation was lost when the crystal became rounded, indicating weakening of the interaction between the nano-crystals and the substrate.
