Standardizing the Permissible Mass Error in Monitoring Connecting Rods and Pistons

Abstract

Standardization of the mass error when sorting products into groups by mass is considered. On the basic of probability theory and fundamental metrological principles, a formula is obtained for the error in the mass difference. Recommendations are made for metrological improvements in indirect measurements of the mass difference. A formula is obtained for the standardized error as a function of the tolerances on the mass difference. In addition, criteria are proposed for selecting the instruments used to measure the mass difference when assembling the piston and connecting rod group in engine manufacture and repair. The error in selecting components by mass is estimated.
