Abstract

The problem of ice build-up on cable-stayed bridges is addressed, and innovative ways to solve this issue are examined. The urgency to automate the process of removing ice and snow from guy lines is discussed. A new concept of an adaptive mobile parallel Octahedral Ice Breaker robot is presented to remove frozen snow and ice from guy lines. The potential of effective removal of ice from guy lines is shown using an example of a power physical kinematic model of the Octahedral Ice Breaker operating in any spatial orientation. The potential application of the Octahedral Ice Breaker is considered to remove ice and snow from linear components in engineering structures.
