Dendritic liquation in iron alloys as a function of the mass and physical properties of the secondary elements

Steel in Translation Aims and scope

Abstract

The dendritic liquation of metal impurities is characterized by nonuniform composition in the dendritic spines and the intervening regions. In iron alloys, the mean liquation for all the elements declines with increase in concentration of the additive; for an individual element, by contrast, the liquation increases with increase in its concentration. A refined sequence of elements in terms of their surface activity in liquid iron is formulated. This sequence may be used in selecting elements for the desorption of harmful impurities from the surface of solidifying metal crystals.
