Abstract
A simple and rapid spectrophotometric method for the determination of penicillins has been developed. The method is based on the measurement of ultraviolet absorbance at 323–346 nm of reaction products with 1–2 M 1,2,4-triazole and 1 × 10-3 M mercury(ll) chloride in solution (pH 9.0) for 10 min at 60°C. The method, which permits detection of concentrations of penicillins down to 0.1 μg/ml, is accurate and precise. The assay of amino-penicillins was interfered with the coexistence of the corresponding penicilloic acids, while the method is specific to other intact penicillins without interference of the corresponding penicilloic acids.
