Argonne invites applications for the position of Materials Science (MSD) Division Director, one of the five research divisions within the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate. Major ongoing research programs in the division include the science of synthesis, hard and soft condensed matter and materials physics, materials chemistry including energy conversion and storage, and electron, neutron and x-ray scattering. The Division Director’s responsibilities also include promoting interactions within the Division and throughout the Laboratory in such areas as quantum information sciences, x-ray sciences, electrical energy storage, and high performance computing.

The Division Director has line management responsibility for research, development and operations of the division. The Director will develop and plan the short and long term strategic direction of the division and be proactive in identifying and pursuing new R&D opportunities. The Director interacts with Laboratory Management, Department of Energy (DOE) program sponsors and various other sponsoring entities to review and promote the divisional research and development activities. In addition, the Director will develop, manage and motivate a high-performing and diverse population of multi-disciplinary scientific, technical and professional support teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

PhD degree in a relevant science or engineering field supplemented by no less than fifteen years’ experience including relevant, demonstrated accomplishments in scientific leadership and management accompanied by an internationally recognized research stature.
