Conclusion

The trend in magnetic recording shows no sign of altering its steady march toward higher density and higher rate. With disk density now twice that possible with optical Systems and two orders of magnitude of growth remaining, the future looks bright, indeed, for magnetic recording. The historical growth of densiry can be largely attributed to the steady solution of materials-related problems, and the future brings that dependence into even sharper focus. The problems become ever more difficult, but the benefits from their solution are enormous.
