Abstract
An extension of the Weizsäcker mass formula is discussed, in which the pairing term is replaced with a Majorana term. The Majorana term accounts for the spin-isospin symmetry of nuclei, which is related to Wigner’s SU(4) symmetry. This scheme is generalised to the simultaneous description of normal (i.e. non-strange) nuclei and Λ hypernuclei by extending the SU(4) symmetry to the SU(6) spin-flavour symmetry.
