Abstract

Since several years, digital platforms drive the transformation of value creation in traditional industries. Also within the automotive sector the relevance of digital products and services is raising. The automotive manufacturers approach an integration of the customer’s digital world within their cars. Especially the manufacturers of premium vehicles endeavor a broad digital offer towards the purchasers. An attractive application and service portfolio is considered as trait for differentiation towards lower pricing competitors. This work investigates challenges occurring at the appliance of such a digital platform, which is required for the development of the desired products. Thus, for example, the manufacturer’s organization and processes are optimized for the development of proprietary systems. They embody a competitive advantage for the development of physical products. However, this approach interferes the development of a digital platform and inherent applications. The establishment of a common platform understanding as well as a granular shift of development capabilities towards the platform embody chances for mastering those challenges. These and further success factors have direct implications for automotive manufacturers, which are establishing several manifestations of digital platform currently.
