Abstract

The pyrolysis of the polycyclic n-alkylaromatic compounds, n-alkylpyrenes, methyl-anthracenes and n-alkylnaphthalenes is reviewed. The types and distributions of the decomposition products and also the mechanisms proposed for their formation are described. The theoretical calculations published on the feasibility of the unique elementary hydrogen transfer step, radical hydrogen transfer, are also discussed.
