Abstract

This paper considers the problems of applied cultural-geographic zoning of Russia. Relying upon the experience of forerunners, the author suggests the system of zoning criteria (the history of the development of a territory, its ethnic and cultural specificity, etc.). Based on these criteria, the author’s scheme of cultural-geographic zoning is suggested for solving tasks of geographic education. At the first hierarchic level, 12 cultural geographic regions of Russia are distinguished. The nominative traditions of humanities have been used in naming a number of regions, e.g., the Russian North, the Russian South, and the Russian West. A model for describing a geographic region has been developed that includes the following positions: the image of the region, nature of the region, geohistory of the region and subregions, major regional actors, regional community, and major cities and places in a region.
