Abstract

Peculiarities of plasma electrolytic oxidation of stainless steel (grade 12Kh16N10T) in an aqueous electrolyte-suspension with tantalic acid and the composition and structure of formed surface layers have been investigated. Under the effect of bipolar anodic–cathodic current, thin interference films are formed on steel within 10 min. The surface has a grained structure. Grains of characteristic sizes of ~10 μm are separated by interfaces of a width of about 1 μm. Tantalum in the form of Ta2O5 is present in the composition of objects of sizes less than 200 nm at the interfaces.
