Synthesis, properties, and structure of tetrazoles: Certain achievements and prospects

Abstract

The review generalizes and systematizes the results of research on the synthesis and properties of tetrazole derivatives obtained in the Belarusian State University within the last decade. The main attention is fixed on important directions in the tetrazole synthesis: the acid-catalyzed N-alkylation, the reactions of primary amines with triethyl orthoformate and sodium azide followed by the heterocyclization of imidoyl azides, and on the transformation of the obtained 1-aryltetrazoles into 1-aryl-5-aminotetrazoles. The results of quantum-chemical and X-ray investigations as well as aspects of the practical application of tetrazoles are reviewed.

To the memory of Professor G.I. Koldobskii

Sergei Voitekhovich was born in 1974 in Polotsk, Vitebsk oblast (Belarus). In 1996 he graduated from Belarusian State University. In 2002 he sustained the thesis of Candidate of Chemical Sciences. He is leading researcher in the laboratory of the chemistry of condensed media of the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University.

Field of scientific interests: chemistry of azoles and their coordination compounds, synthesis and chemical transformations of nanocrystals stabilized by organic ligands.

Oleg Ivashkevich was born in 1954 in Belaya Tserkov’ (Ukraine). In 1976 he graduated from the Belarusian State University, in 1982 sustained the thesis of Candidate of Chemical Sciences. In 1997–2009 he was the Director of the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University. He sustained the thesis of Doctor of Chemical Sciences in 1998. In 2004 he was elected Correspond member, and in 2009, Full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus’. Since 2009 he is the Deputy Rector for scientific research of the Belarusian State University.

Field of scientific interests: structure and physicochemical properties of polynitrogen compounds, applied quantum chemistry, the investigation of structure and properties of small clusters of transition metals.

Pavel Gaponik was born in 1941 in Gortol’ village, Brest oblast (Belarus’). In 1965 he graduated from Belarusian State University. He became Candidate of Chemical Sciences in 1970, Doctor of Chemical Sciences in 2001. He is the principal researcher of the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems at the Belarusian State University. In 2008 he was awarded the title of Professor. He is the author of over 400 scientific publications.

Field of scientific interests: fundamental and applied problems of the chemistry of tetrazole and related compounds including polymers and metal complexes; regioselective synthesis in azole chemistry.
