Abstract

1,2-Epoxy-9-(p-tolylsulfonyl)-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazole reacted with acetyl bromide on heating to give 1-acetoxy-2-bromo-9-(p-tolylsulfonyl)-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazole and 1-acetoxy-9-acetyl-2,6-dibromo-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazole. The structure of the latter was proved by X-ray analysis. Analogous reaction of 1-bromo-9-(p-tolylsulfonyl)-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazole with acetyl bromide led to the formation of 9-acetyl-1,6-dibromo-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydrocarbazole.
